Poland will abandon plans to fence off its eastern border against African Swine Fever (ASF)-carrying wild boar after the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) criticism of the idea as ineffective, Agriculture Minister Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski said on Thursday. Ardanowski told the Sejm (lower house) Agriculture Committee that according to EFSA the fence would prove ineffective against the spread of the disease, which is harmless to humans but lethal to livestock pigs. In its report on the matter last week, the Authority observed that fencing over shorter distances could prove a good local measure against boar, but was insufficient to safeguard the entire border.
